T-Mobile Android Phone Release Seen Bringing 'Avalanche'

But some disagree on where start-ups should focus their efforts if they aim to make money in this fast-changing landscape.

At the Wireless Innovations 2008 conference in Redwood City, Calif., sponsored by Dow Jones & Co., Joe Sims, vice president and general manager of T-Mobile's broadband and new business division, said he had already seen prototypes of the company's Android-based phone, which are scheduled to ship in this year's final quarter.

(This story also appeared in Venture Wire, a newsletter published by Dow Jones & Co. that covers the venture-capital industry.)

"I'm impressed," he said. "We will have more than one product...(The move to an open platform) will be innovation across the board, not just one device."

T-Mobile, like other carriers, was leery of Google at first, because the open platform that the search giant was pushing seemed radical and untested, Sims said. T-Mobile is now a part of Google's Open Handset Alliance, as is chip maker Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM).

Like T-Mobile, Qualcomm was "skeptical" of Google's plan at first, said Sayeed Choudhury, Qualcomm's vice president of product management for CDMA technologies. "But we got over that hurdle when we saw the use-case models," Choudhury said. "The Web-browsing, the taking and uploading of pictures."

Choudhury said he expects big changes to happen fast once the Android phones get into consumers' hands. Nedim Fresko, director of strategic platform initiatives at Blackberry maker Research in Motion Ltd. (RIMM), predicted T- Mobile's release would be a "wake-up call for innovation."

But conference panelists differed on what areas of mobile technology - video distribution, social networking, enterprise or entertainment - were likely to heat up first.

"Security is the issue," Fresko said. "People want secure, managed and safe" networks.

John Smelzer, a senior vice president and manager of News Corp.'s (NWS) Fox Entertainment Group Inc.'s interactive media division, said photo and video distribution would be the "next killer app."

News Corp. owns Dow Jones & Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires.

Fox isn't immediately interested in moving social networks to mobile, Smelzer said, but it sees great potential in start-ups working on applications that replicate the broader online experience on handsets - for instance, middleware companies, content aggregators, ad distributors and companies working on encoding and transcoding data.

Subscription-based video has served Fox well, Smelzer said, and the company plans to continue that model as networks and handsets move toward openness.

"For the long tail, we think it will be mobile Web," he said.

T-Mobile says all of its offerings will be tailored to the consumer, and the consumer, in turn, will tell the carriers what they expect their mobile devices to be able to do.

Panelists agreed that the major, inevitable changes in the next few years won't be top-down changes, but will be a response from carriers to consumers, who are going mobile in ever greater numbers and learning to expect much more from their phones. In addition, they said, the time is ripe for innovators and start-ups to deliver what consumers want in new, possibly lucrative ways.

"The college kids out there have all the ingredients, finally," said J.H. Kah, senior vice president of Korean cellular service provider SK Telecom Co. (SKM).

"It's so easy and cheap for these kids to start new ventures," Kah said. "VCs ought to look at very early-stage (companies), but the real winners (will be) those that stick around a few years."

Philips full touchscreen mobile phone

Looks like Philips also wants a piece of the full touchscreen mobile phone action. Here is the X800 featuring a huge touchscreen which can be used in both landscape and portrait mode. The phone will be tagged with “e2e" which means "Full edge to edge touch-screen". I would love to see some live pics.

5.1 mega pixel SCNY mobile phone

Here is the SCNY 5.1 mega pixel mobile phone from China...and yes it's not a typo...SCNY...not SONY. It has a dual sided design (like Sony Ericsson), with one side phone and the other a digital camera. It features a 5.1 mega pixel AF camera with xenon flash and optical zoom. It also features face detection and dedicated hardware camera keys. A big 6800 mAh battery promises long operating times. On the phone side is a camera operation optimised key layout and a large touchscreen. All that's missing is some Cyber-shot ripoff label.

Apple Phone: Yay or Nay?

The company has made a name for itself by taking complex technology and making it easy for consumers to use, analysts note. With all the new features that have been bolted on to them in recent years — many of them difficult to access or use — mobile phones are crying out for the “Apple treatment”, some analysts say.Â

Tips for extending Cell Phone battery life

1. Turn off your Bluetooth – Bluetooth is the most power hungry application; turn it off when you don’t use it

2. Disable sounds and vibrating alert – you don’t really need keypad tones to be on, do you? What about vibrating? It is surely useful on the meetings or in a cinema but most of time you’ll do just fine without it; I usually set up a vibrating profile to be used in places like cinema or theatre and in all other profiles I have vibrating turned off

3. Brightness – lower the brightness of your screen; not too low, otherwise you’ll destroy your vision
4. Setting the Power saver time - out and the Light time-out to the low values will help too (you’ll find them in the display settings)

5. If you are not using an application switch it off – you’ll get a list of all active applications by long pressing the menu button; this is a general rule that can be applied to any device

6. Games – it’s fun to play games on your way to school but they are power-hungry beasts; I can’t tell you not to play games but think about your battery when you are playing

7. Turn off your phone when you don’t use it – I know that for many of you this is not an option and I’m not sure if turning it off and on is even good for your battery but I heard this tip from so many people that I just had to mention it

Battery Myths

More volts and amps in the battery means the power tool is stronger and better.
False, actually the motor, transmission and other components that product the power also have a great effect on the tools performance. The quality of the magnets in the motor, metal gears, the chuck that transfer to the bit. Basically it is everything from the battery to the blade or bit, how efficient can it transfer the power.

A charger is a charger
Actually some chargers keep charging even when the battery is fully charged. These causes excess heat build up and decrease your battery life. Most professional power tool battery chargers will shut off. This means once the battery is fully charged, the charger will not try to push current through the batteries to charge it.

Batteries have a memory
This is false, well it use to be true. Back in the 80’s when battery technology was just getting off, a battery did have memory. No-a-days with new technology manufactures have developed batteries with any memory. So currently this is a myth. Draining a battery all the way will actually cause more harm to the battery than good. When you drain a battery all the way, you can actually damage cells and they will no longer hold a charge, therefore you might only be using 11 cells instead of all 12 cells which lower your power and battery life. The best gauge to recharge your battery is to charge the battery when it can no longer function for the job. If the saw starts to die when cutting, then it is time to charge it.

Keep Batteries in the freezer
Sound goofy, but I have seen contractors bring a cooler with ice packs to the jobsites. This will not help your power tool batteries; I am not sure about your camera batteries or other smaller batteries. Actually the cold can hurt your batteries if your try to charge them. NiCad are very durable batteries and will work in all most any environment. If it is too cold for you to work outside then just bring your batteries in with you and the batteries will be fine.

Batteries can be rebuild
Some people say yes and some no. I have read a lot about this and still get both answers. The best thing to do is take them to a store and recycle them. Battery prices are coming down in price. If someone rebuilds the battery, who know if they did a good job or used recycled cells. Best advice is to spend a couple of extra bucks and buy the new factory batteries.

Do not completely drain the battery
Do not completely drain the battery, they do not have memory. Charge the battery when it no longer performs its duty to its fullest capacity.
